The Heart of the Race: Oral Histories of the Black Women's Movement

This oral history project is inspired by the seminal book The Heart of the Race by Beverley Bryan, Stella Dadzie and Suzanne Scafe (Virago, 1985) which recorded and contextualised the stories of Black women and their struggles and achievements in Britain.

The project seeks to collect testimony of those involved in OWAAD (Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent) and other Black women's groups, or who have otherwise been active in fighting for the rights of Black women in the UK.

The project began in December 2008. 15 volunteers have now been trained in oral history interviewing techniques, transcription and sound editing and are currently interviewing Black women around the country. An exhibition and launch event is planned for May 2009. For more information, contact Project Co-ordinator Mia Morris (mia@bcaheritage.org.uk) or check out the project blog.

The project is scheduled for completion in May 2010 and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the 'Documenting The Archives' cataloguing grant.

A steering group supervises the project comprised as follows:

Ego Ahaiwe (Lambeth Women's Project)
Gail Cameron (The Women's Library)
Kelly Foster (Black Cultural Archives)
Ama Gueye (co-founder, East London Black Women's Group)
Valerie Mason-John
Prof. Heidi Mirza (Institute of Education)
Maureen Roberts (Black Cultural Archives, Chair)
Dr. Kimberly Springer (King's College, London)
